Select the first tab of the research station marked 'Scans'; this will list all unknown materials you have encountered, their value in research points, and how much power is required to process them. Press the 'Process' button to process the material, the required power will be deducted and the specified number of research points awarded. These can be used to unlock recipes and projects using the second and third tabs of the research station.
